If you spend a few days at Esponellà Campsite you can’t miss out on visiting Esponellà Castle, which sits on top of a nearby hill.
To get there, leave Esponellà Campsite and head towards the village of Esponellà; there, you’ll find a well-marked path. The trail is short but beautiful, passing through a wood where you can experience the nature that surrounds the Fluvià River.
The castle lies in ruins and is currently being excavated by archaeologists. Nevertheless, it’s easy to make out the different parts of the original structure, such as the three-walled areas. At the highest point stands a tower that has been excavated and restored, and towards the lower part stands another circular tower with an arrow hole.
Beside the castle there is a sign with a brief explanation of the structure’s origins, to give you an idea of what Esponellà Castle looked like in its full glory.
