Enchanted caves of Martís

The nature that surrounds Esponellà Campsite hides many interesting spots that aren't easy to find. We suggest a short walk (about 2 km) to visit the enchanted caves of Martís.

The trail starts at the entrance of Esponellà Campsite and sets out in the same direction as the Dam Trail, but you only go as far as the Martís dam. On the hill to your left stands the Casa dels Enginyers (Engineers’ House), where you’ll also find the former restaurant of Les Heures. You can get there by continuing further on and then taking the path to the left. You’ll reach a clearing with several buildings. Right behind the former restaurant of Les Heures lies the original entrance to the cave of Mariver de Martís, and several metres to the south is the second cave, Encantades de Martís.

These caves were excavated from 1953-1957, and many objects and human remains from the Neolithic period were found; these are now part of the permanent collection of the Banyoles Regional Archaeology Museum.

We don’t recommend visiting these caves after heavy rainfall, as the wetness makes it easy to slip and fall.
